The 5 week course

What to expect

The Bump & Blossom antenatal course runs over 5 weeks, with one 2-hour session per week. Each session is focused on a different topic from understanding your rights in labour, to practical baby care, giving you and your birth partner a thorough, evidence-based foundation to go into birth feeling genuinely prepared.

Classes are kept deliberately small so that every parent has the space to ask questions, share concerns and feel heard. This isn't a lecture, it's a conversation. You'll also get the chance to connect with other expectant parents in Hull who are going through the same journey, which many parents tell us is one of the most valuable parts.

Whether you're a first-time parent with a hundred questions, or going through pregnancy again and wanting a refresher everyone is welcome, and no question is too small.

WEEK BY WEEK

What we cover

Each week builds on the last, so by the time you've completed the course you'll have a really well-rounded understanding of what's ahead. Here's what we go through together over the 5 sessions.

WEEK 1

Autonomy, Choice and Planning

We start by exploring your rights in maternity care and what it really means to have an informed say in your birth. Understanding how to ask questions, weigh up your options and advocate for yourself is something every parent deserves to feel confident doing. We also cover emotional wellbeing and early preparation for birth, including understanding hormonal changes, building your support system, birth partner preparation and the practical side of getting ready, from knowing what to pack in your hospital bag to feeling confident walking into that delivery room.

WEEK 2

Understanding Birth & Labour

We walk through the stages of labour in a straightforward, honest way. What to expect, how your body works, what pain relief options are available, and how your birth partner can really support you in the room. We also cover optimum birthing positions and mobility, with plenty of opportunity for practical demonstrations and group practice. No scary stories, just clear, evidence-based information.

WEEK 3

Immediate post birth care, complex birth and postnatal recovery

This session covers a broad range of topics to make sure you feel prepared for every possible outcome. We look at how to protect the perineum, reducing the risk of tearing and addressing the common fears and myths around it. We cover complex births including induction of labour, assisted deliveries and both planned and emergency caesarean sections, so that whatever happens on the day you feel informed and in control. We also cover immediate postnatal care including skin to skin, vitamin K and neonatal checks, as well as postnatal recovery topics such as what bleeding after delivery is normal, pelvic floor health, rest and recovery and what support is available to you.

WEEK 4

Feeding your baby

This session covers breast and formula feeding in depth, giving you everything you need to make a fully informed decision about what is right for you and your baby. We discuss responsive feeding and how to understand and detect feeding cues from your baby, as well as antenatal colostrum harvesting and milk storage. We also cover bonding, troubleshooting common concerns, what to look out for in those early days and where to access support if you need it.

WEEK 5

Newborn care and early parenthood

We round off the course with everything you need to feel ready for those first days and weeks at home. This session covers newborn behaviours and practical newborn care including bathing, nappy changing and cord care, with demonstrations and plenty of opportunity to practice. We also cover infant CPR, demonstrated using mannequins with a chance for everyone to have a go, safe sleeping guidance and the emotional transition into parenthood.

ALSO AVAILABLE

Early Pregnancy Class

Not quite ready for the full course yet? The Early Pregnancy Class is a standalone session designed for those in the earlier weeks of pregnancy who want to start getting informed without waiting.

We cover what to expect from your pregnancy appointments, screening and tests, how your baby grows and develops, bonding in early pregnancy, and how to manage common symptoms. It's a relaxed, welcoming session — and birth partners are of course welcome too.
